The Dorm and Desk Coffee Setup: Real Coffee With No Kitchen at All

A dorm room or office desk rules out most coffee advice immediately: no stove, no counter, maybe one shared sink down the hall. What's left is actually enough. An electric kettle and an immersion-style brewer make coffee that beats the campus café line — from a setup that fits in a desk drawer and cleans up in a minute.

Build around the kettle and one forgiving brewer

The electric kettle is the only appliance you need (check your dorm's rules — kettles with auto-shutoff are widely allowed where hot plates aren't). Pair it with a press-style immersion brewer: it's plastic, so it survives backpacks and drops; it's forgiving, so imperfect water temperature doesn't matter; and its cleanup is one pressed puck into the bin, which a shared-sink life will make you grateful for daily.

Storage is the desk's constraint, so the kit must nest: grinder and filters inside the mug, mug beside the brewer, everything in one drawer or pouch. If it takes more than thirty seconds to deploy or stow, it will lose to the vending machine by midterms.
